QUICK STOP OF KITCHEN FIRE

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

On Tuesday afternoon August 1, 2006, at approximately 1:40 PM, the Lynbrook Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire at 89 Winter Street near Fowler Avenue.  Engine Company #1 was first on the scene and found smoke billowing from the side door of the two family structure.  With the assistance of the second arriving company, Tally-Ho Engine 3, a line was stretched to the upstairs kitchen area.  Through heavy smoke it was determined that the upstairs tenant had left food burning on the stove.  The fire, which was climbing up the wall behind the stove, was quickly extinguished.  Damage was contained to the stove, the wall behind the stove, and the ceiling area.  Truck Company members also assisted by checking of the ceiling and wall area to make sure the fire had no spread beyond the kitchen.  The rest of the department stood-by.  There were no injuries and firefighters were at the scene for about 45 minutes.
