Lynbrook Firefighters Make Quick Stop of Bedroom Fire

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

On Friday morning, July 7, 2006, at 2:24 AM, the Lynbrook Fire Department, under the command of Fire Chief Keith Festa, was dispatched to a reported house fire at 40 Jefferson Street, just off Charles Street.

The homeowner who had gotten out of her burning home called the fire department from her neighbor’s home.  She reported that her bedroom was on fire and her tenant was in the basement.  As the Chiefs and the fire companies were responding to the scene, Lynbrook police officers Bob Hart and Chris McCarthy had arrived first on the scene helped the downstairs tenant get out of the burning home.

Upon the arrival of Chief Festa, he broadcast a Signal 10, for a working fire, as Vulcan Company, from Denton Avenue, arrived.  Vulcan dropped  a  line at the hydrant at Charles and Jefferson Streets and proceeded up the block to the burning home.  Vulcan then stretched an attack hose line into the home as the bedroom was now fully involved in fire.  Engine Company arrived and took a backup line from Vulcan to the front door while Tally-Ho Company manned an additional backup line and to cover any exposures, if  necessary.  Truck Company ventilated the smoke from the house while Vulcan members made an aggressive attack of the fire in the bedroom.  It took firefighters about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control and another hour to overhaul the bedroom.

The quick attack of the fire contained the fire to just the bedroom and stopped it before it spread to the attic and other rooms in the house. The tenant who was brought out of the home by the police officers was taken to the Emergency Medical Company’s ambulance where he was treated and later released.

The homeowner suffered no injuries.   Firefighters were on the scene till about 5 AM.  According to Chief Festa, the cause of fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
