Hotel Construction Scaffold Collapse

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

On Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at approximately 8:15 AM the Lynbrook Fire Department was dispatched to a scaffolding collapse with workers down at the Sunrise Executive Hotel on Sunrise Highway at Ocean Avenue.   The hotel is closed and under renovation as the owners add a new third floor to the hotel.

Lynbrook firefighters, under the command of Third Deputy Chief Kevin Bien, found that a small section of the three story scaffolding on the Sunrise Highway side of the building had collapsed sending five laborers to the ground.

With the large number of injured, Deputy Chief Bien ordered an immediate mutual aid for additional ambulances from the Rockville Centre and East Rockaway Fire Departments.  The most seriously injured was a worker who had a piece of rebar through his arm and a head wound.   He was transported by Lynbrook fire medics to South Nassau Hospital.  The others workers, who had minor injuries, were also transported to area hospitals by the mutual aid ambulances.

The Village of Lynbrook’s Building Department was called to the scene and is investigating the cause of the collapse and issued a stop work order until the investigation and any necessary job site safety and code violations found are corrected.
