First Responders Team up at Two Calls

Story & photos by  Ex Captain Steven Grogan

On Thursday, April 25, 2019, at about 7:45 PM, with a drizzling rain, Lynbrook firefighters and police were dispatched to a reported auto accident on Peninsula Boulevard near Hempstead Avenue.  Lynbrook Fire Chief Nicholas Pearsall arrived on the scene to find three vehicles involved in the accident and that multiple occupants were injured.  The chief immediately broadcast a Mass Casualty Incident to Fire Communications which brought additional responses by Nassau County Police EMS besides the LFD's Emergency Medical Company ambulances and ambulances from North Shore Hospital which were already en route.  In total, six occupants of the vehicles were removed by paramedics and firefighters from the wrecked vehicles.  All were transported to local hospitals.  Two of the injured were in trauma and two were children.

While still at the accident scene, firefighters and police were notified of another call.  A pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle on Merrick Road at Blossom Heath Avenue.  Firefighters, police and ambulances responded to that scene.  The pedestrian was reportedly struck while crossing Merrick Road by a black vehicle which fled the scene.  The pedestrian, who was transported to the hospital by a Nassau County Police ambulance, died.  Lynbrook police closed Merrick Road as a hit and run crime scene investigation was begun.  The pedestrian's shoe could be seen in the middle of Merrick Road.  The identity of the pedestrian was not released.
