Garage Fire

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

On the morning of June 5, 2019, employees with the village's Department of Public Works were tree-trimming on Blossom Heath just off Sherman Street when they saw black smoke billowing from the rear area of a house and detached garage on the corner of Blossom Heath and Sherman Street.  The employees were Charlie Curcio, Aidan Ryder, Mike Koerner, and Joe Fazzino.    They ran to the house and found the back of the home's detached garage on fire.  The fire was consuming the outside back wall of the garage.   They grabbed the homeowners garden hose and started putting out the fire.  While they were doing this a neighbor who had also seen the smoke called the Lynbrook Fire Department.  The homeowner was not home but arrived just before the firefighters.  When firefighters arrived under the command of Second Assistant Chief John Donald they checked the exterior wall and determined that the fire had not extended to the roof or inside the garage.  The homeowner admitted that the family had used a fire pit the night before and had put the coals behind the garage after they watered them down.  The DPW employees were recognized for their actions at the Lynbrook Village Board Meeting on June 17th.
