Coffee Anyone?

Story & photos by  Ex Captain Steven Grogan

Two people were injured on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at about 3:15 PM when a car sped in reverse into the Starbuck's store in Phillips Plaza on Sunrise Highway, injuring the driver and a customer in the store.  Lynbrook firefighters, under the command of Chief James McDermott, responded with Truck Company, Tally-Ho Engine 3, and the Emergency Medical Company.  Lynbrook police had also responded as did ambulances from the Nassau County Police EMS.  It was learned at the scene that a woman driving a Honda Accord, and while backing out of a parking space opposite the coffee store, and at a high rate of speed, jumped the curb and plowed through the huge glass front window and door.  The car struck a female customer in the store and also destroyed furniture inside.  With the window and door frame on top of the Honda, the driver put the car in drive and drove back out of the store, again at a high rate of speed, and hit two parked cars.  The Honda's back bumper was left inside the store and shattered glass was everywhere. The driver and customer were transported to South Nassau Hospital by Nassau County. Neither were seriously hurt.  Lynbrook police were investigating the cause of the accident.
