Juniors Drill at Fire Academy

Story by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan; Photos by Ex-Captain Mike Gunning

Back on October 11, 2015, members of the Lynbrook Junior Fire Department participated in the 7th Annual Junior Drill at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy in Bethpage.  This annual event is organized by the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association of which Lynbrook FD is one of the founding departments.  The junior association is comprised of 38 Junior FD's and Explorer programs in Nassau County.

Six of Lynbrook Juniors, Danny Neri, Alex Mertz, Connor O'Reilly, Kevin Gunning, Andrew Abrams, and Terrell Hamm attended.  Advisors Firefighter Chris Hynes and Ex-Captain Mike Gunning took the juniors to the training and were also present.  There was a total of 187 boys and girls that attended that day.

The training which went from 8 AM to 3 PM was organized around training stations with groups of kids rotating to learn about Mask Confidence, Tower Ladder Operations, Search, Hose Advancement, Truck and Engine Work, and Forcible Entry.  The kids  were required to wear full turnout gear and were taught by junior advisors and other department members who manned the stations.  Instructors from the NCFSA were also on hand and assisted.  Two of those NCFSA instructors on hand were our own Chief Chavatte and FDNY Chief George Healy.
