LFD Hosts the 7th Annual Fundraiser for Wounded Warriors

Story by Steve Grogan; Photos by Steve and Brian Grogan

On Saturday, September 9, 2017, Lynbrook firefighters hosted their Seventh Annual Concert for the Troops to benefit Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior.  The event, held from 5 to 11 PM, was in front of and inside the truck bays of Rescue, Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company No. 1, on Earle Avenue.  Two bands, the Project and Moondance, donated their time play for the firefighters and the residents who came out to support the fire departments efforts to help our wounded warriors.  The Glor Na nGael Bagpipe Band also performed for everyone.  Special guests for the evening were four wounded soldiers and Marines, and their families, who came up from rehab units at Bethesda, MD, and Fort Belvoir, VA.  They stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Sunrise Highway.  Many companies, businesses and restaurants donated prizes that were raffled off that evening.  One of our regular sponsors is JetBlue Airways who donated two sets of round-trip tickets anywhere they fly as a raffle prizes.   During the evening it took almost 90 minutes to distribute all the prizes that were raffled off that night. Some of the actual cash contributions received that night was a $750 from Lynbrook's American Legion Post 335, and a $500 donation from the Lynbrook New Vision Party.  And, Assemblyman Brian Curran donated $2800 from a road race he held for veterans in the May.  Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino and Town Councilman Anthony D'Esposito presented a Citation to the department for our work for our wounded warriors.  In return, they were given a "WE SUPPORT" Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior plaque to hang in Town Hall.  Over the prior six years the Lynbrook Fire Department has donated over $110,000 to NCFF-OWW for our wounded warriors.  Ex-Chief Kevin Bien, the chairman of Lynbrook's fundraiser, along with his committee, and the many firefighters, Ladies Auxiliary, and our Juniors who sold NCFF-OWW T-shirts, did a great job.  Final amount raised this year is not yet known until all the bills are paid.
