Overturn at Busy Intersection During Morning Rush
Story & photos by  Ex Captain Steven Grogan

On Friday morning, October 9, 2009, at about 7:15 AM, Lynbrook firefighters and medical personnel were dispatched to a reported overturned vehicle at Sunrise Highway and Broadway.  The department, under the command of Second Deputy Michael Hynes, responded with the Extrication Team and the Emergency Medical Company.  Firefighters found that the vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was not at the intersection but about 100 feet west of the intersection, off the highway, and into a pillar at the Long Island Railroad train station.  According to witnesses, the Explorer was heading west on Sunrise Highway when it collided with another vehicle at the intersection.  The Explorer then flipped a number of times along the sidewalk and took down a light stanchion.  The vehicle finally landed back on its wheels under the station.  The driver climbed out of the vehicle and was walking around when police and firefighters arrived.  The driver appeared to have only a bleeding hand.  Medical Company personnel attended to the driver and transported him to the hospital.  At the time of the accident Long Island Railroad commuters were in and around the intersection and the station when the accident occurred.  Luckily, no pedestrians were hit.
