Story by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan; Photos by George McCluskey, Village Photographer

Ex-Chief John Obanhein of Hose Company of the Lynbrook Fire Department was honored with a Citation by Mayor Brian Curran and the Village Board at the December 1, 2008 Village Board meeting for his quick actions on October 16, 2008 when he extinguished a fire on the outside of a home in Valley Stream.  An occupant of the home, who was recuperating from knee surgery, was unaware that her house was on fire.

According to a letter from the homeowner to the Department, Chief Obanhein was driving past the home “when he observed an area of siding by our front door that was on fire.  He immediately started extinguishing the fire and stopped a situation that could have turned very tragic.”  The homeowner, who was present at the board meeting for the presentation, also stated in his letter, “I would like to once again express how much we appreciate his actions and thank him for his service to the community.”

The Chiefs and members of Hose Company were present for the presentation.
