Firefighters Free Injured Persons

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

Just after 11 PM on Monday, December 22nd, 2008, the Lynbrook Fire Department, under the command of Chief John O'Reilly, responded to a reported auto into a pole, with multiple aided, at the intersection of Merrick Road and Horton Avenue.  The Emergency Medical Company and the Department's Extrication Team responded immediately.  Additionally, Tally-Ho Engine 3 also responded from their nearby firehouse.

Firefighters found that a four door pick-up had crashed head-on into a telephone pole on the corner of the intersection in front of the Gulf gas station.  Two of the three people were able to get out of the vehicle but the person in the back seat was injured more seriously and was trapped.  The Extrication Team had to cut off the back door to remove that passenger and get him on a stretcher.  That person was taken to the hospital by the Medical Company.  The other two people in the vehicle were also treated at the scene, put on stretchers,  and transported to the hospital by an ambulance from the Valley Stream Fire Department, which responded on a mutual aid.
