Car Goes Airborne

Story & photos by  Ex Captain Steven Grogan

Three of four people in a vehicle allegedly speeding down Merrick Road near Wendy's in Lynbrook early on New Year's Eve morning were injured and taken to the hospital after their car struck a snow bank catapulting the car into the air and landing over 70 feet away in another snow bank.  The Lynbrook Fire Department under the command of First Deputy Chief Mike Hynes responded to the scene with Ambulance Unit 425A from the Emergency Medical Company and Tally-Ho Engine 423.  With three injured, two Nassau County Police ambulances also responded.  The three occupants, suffering only minor injuries, were taken to area hospitals by the three ambulances.  Lynbrook police also on the scene believe that the driver may have fallen asleep while driving eastbound on Merrick Road.  A tow truck later pulled the car off the snow bank.  Firefighters were at the scene for about 45 minutes.
