Remembering Our Fallen

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

On Sunday, October 20, 2013, Lynbrook Firefighters, the Ladies Auxiliary, and the Juniors, led by Chief of Department Edward J. Hynes, gathered at the Firefighters Memorial on Sunrise Highway to remember six Lynbrook volunteers who made the supreme sacrifice and died in the line of duty for this community.  Monsignor William Breslawski of Our Lady of Peace opened the service with a prayer and Pastor Alex Kennedy of St John's Lutheran Church closed with the Benediction.  State Senator Dean Skelos, Hemptead Town Councilman Anthony Santino, Mayor William Hendrick, Village Trustee Michael Hawkhurst, and Village Associate Justice William Gaylor Jr, attended the memorial service, as did Lynbrook Police Benevolent Association President Joseph Cipolla, and Denise Rogers, President of the Chamber of Commerce.  After the service a breakfast was held at the K of C Hall on Hempstead Avenue where Joseph Whittaker, a fire investigator and canine handler with the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Investigative Division was the guest speaker.  Whittaker brought his K-9, Umi, a black Labrador Retriever, who was trained by the federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency, and demonstrated the dog's ability to locate accelerants used in arson fires.
