On May 20, 2012, Lynbrook FD Ex-Captain Richard Straub, and Lynbrook Police Officer Steve Takacs, amongst others, were honored by the Lynbrook-East Rockaway Rotary Club at a luncheon and presented with the organizations 15th Annual John Rossetti-Diane Pirrone "Service Above Self" award. Straub and Takacs were honored for helping to save the live of a young child in September 2, 2011. On that date, both had responded to the scene where the child was not breathing. Acting as a team they first performed CPR and then jumped into Takacs' patrol car and raced to South Nassau Communities Hospital. According to the Rotary, "This significant act of dedication to duty resulted in saving the life of this young child." Chief Anthony DeCarlo, in remarks about Ex-Captain Straub, said, "He's a fine member of the Lynbrook Fire Department who is instrumental in getting the job done no matter what the task involves." The chief also described him as "a role model for new firefighters."
