Car Fire on Sunrise Highway Snarls Traffic

Story by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan; Photos by Junior Firefighter Anthony LaBarca

On late afternoon June 8, 2012, during the homebound rush hour, Lynbrook firefighters responded to a reported car fire at Sunrise Highway and Horton Avenue. Hose Company, Tally-Ho Company, and Truck Company, responded to the scene. Firefighters found a car fully involved in fire in the parking lot of Leslie's Pool Supply store on Sunrise just east of Horton Avenue. Hose Company stretched a hose line and extinguished the burning vehicle which was totally destroyed. With two lanes closed on Sunrise Highway due to the fire, traffic, which was backed up to for more than a mile, caused drivers to seek other eastbound routes which also clogged and backed up Merrick Road. The highway was totally re-opened in about an hour.
