Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

The Lynbrook Fire Department came to the aid of a Lynbrook police officer after he was injured by an allegedly intoxicated motorist who plowed into a two police vehicles during a traffic investigation on Sunrise Highway in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 13, 2003.

On that morning at about 4:15 AM, a Lynbrook police officer pulled over a motorist westbound on Sunrise Highway, east of Horton Avenue, for the investigation of a vehicle & traffic law violation.   Shortly thereafter a second police officer arrived on the scene to assist.  While the officers were conducting their investigation on the grassy area along Sunrise Highway, an allegedly intoxicated motorist, also traveling westbound on the highway, hit one of the Lynbrook police vehicles, which was parked off the highway, and then plowed into the rear of the second police vehicle.  Both police vehicles had its emergency lights flashing at the time.  Luckily, both officers were out of their vehicles at the time.  One of the police officers, however, standing near his police vehicle suffered an injured ankle trying to escape the accident.

The Lynbrook Fire Department under the command of First Deputy Chief Kevin Bien responded with an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Company and the department’s Extrication Team.  The Medical Company transported the injured officer to the hospital for treatment.  He was later released.

The female driver who struck the police vehicles was arrested for investigation of driving while intoxicated.
