Mutual Aid to Valley Stream

Story & photos from video by  Ex Captain Steven Grogan

August 8, 2012 the Lynbrook Fire Department was one of seven departments that responded Wednesday night to assist the Valley Stream Fire Department with a Signal 10 building fire on West Merrick Road and Shaw Avenue. Valley Stream firefighters were called out at 10:55 PM for a reported fire in a row of about 10 stores at that location. Firefighters upon their arrival found a dry cleaners fully involved and fire blowing out the front window. While lines were being stretched and units were arriving the fast moving fire moved westbound eventually spreading to three other storefronts before it was stopped. The fire moved from store to store by way of a small spaced common cockloft that stretched the block. Additional stores also received damage. Lynbrook's Emergency Medical Company was first called and responded with unit 425. Then Truck Company Unit 427 responded as a fast team. Both First Assistant Chief Edward Hynes and Third Assistant Chief James McDermott were at the scene. The Medical Company transported one Valley Stream firefighter to the hospital. Lynbrook firefighters were at the scene for about three hours.
