LFD Extingiushes Three Floor House Fire

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

On Friday evening January 19th at about 10:15 PM the Lynbrook Fire Department, under the command of Fire Chief Keith Festa, responded to a reported house fire on Charles Street in Lynbrook.  Chief Festa, upon his arrival at the house broadcast a Signal 10 for a working fire in the three story home.  Engine Company 1 was first on the scene and dropped two lines, and with the help of Vulcan Company 2, and other members of the department, attacked the fire which had spread from the basement up the walls to the third floor.  Firefighters had to extinguish the fire in the walls on each of the three floors of the house.  Truck Company, which put both ladders up to the roof, assisted with the pulling of the walls so that the fire could be reached and put out on each floor.  Rockville Centre FD sent a "Fast Team" to the scene and Malverne FD sent an engine while East Rockaway sent an ambulance to the scene.  The Valley Stream FD stood by to cover additional fire alarms in Lynbrook.  The fire was believed started when the homeowner was doing plumbing repairs in the basement.  One firefighter was injured in a fall and was taken to the hospital while a resident of the home was treated by the Emergency Medical Company for smoke inhalation at the scene and released.  Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour and a half.  The Village of Lynbrook's Building Department also responded to inspect the home.
