Lynbrook firefighters were called on a mutual aid to the Lakeview
Fire Department just before 5 AM on Sunday morning, September 19,
2021, Lakeview had reported that a two-story row of stores on
Woodfield Road and Eagle Avenue was ablaze. Calls for mutual aid
was put out to all surrounding fire departments. Originally, the
mutual aid to Lynbrook was for our Emergency Medical Company but was
soon upgraded for also an engine to respond to the fire scene.
Lynbrook Fire Chief John Donald responded to the fire scene while
First Assistant Chief Chris Kelly responded with Engine Company 1,
and Third Assistant Chief Scott Bien responded with the ambulance to
Lakeview headquarters. The Medical Company was then moved up to a
medical staging area north of the fire scene on Woodfield Road.
Second Assistant Chief Dan Ambrosio stayed in Lynbrook to answer
Lynbrook alarms.
Engine Company responded through Hempstead State Park and over
Southern State onto Eagle Avenue. They crossed the LIRR tracks on
Eagle Avenue and parked on Eagle just before Woodfield. They
secured a water source on Hempstead Gardens Drive and then dropped
400 feet of 5 inch supply hose line to feed Rockville Centre's
Eureka tower ladder.
Chief Donald was at the command post with Lakeview and other
chiefs and helped direct the ground exterior operations while First
Assistant Chief Kelly joined Engine company members operating hose
lines on the set-back roof area on the southern side of the burning
building. they were working with Rockville Centre and Malverne
engine members putting out pockets of fire that the ladder water
could not reach due to the high tension lines above the building.
Engine Company also stretched a 2 and 1/2 inch line from Engine to
assist with the overhaul and knocking down hot spots from the
street level. Engine Company's hose lines were an integral part of
the extinguishment of the fire on the south side of the building.
Lynbrook firefighters were at the scene for four hours not leaving
till after 9 AM. There were no injuries to Lynbrook firefighters.
