Garbage Truck Fire
Story and Photos by Steve Grogan
On the morning of June 1, 2018, Lynbrook firefighters responded to a
reported truck fire on Merrick Road near Charles Street. First
Assistant Chief Nick Pearsall arrived and immediately raised the
alarm to a general alarm as huge flames and heavy smoke billowed
from the Westbury Cardboard Company garbage truck. Chief
Pearsall ordered the driver to dump his load of burning cardboard
into the roadway so it could be extinguished. As only a
portion of the burning debris was dumped into the street because of
a mechanical problem with the truck, additional cardboard remained
burning in the vehicle. Lynbrook Hose Company was first on the
scene and stretched its first line to fight the fire. With the
arrival of other fire units additional lines were stretched from
Hose Company to fight the fire in the street and in the truck.
Truck Company members helped with the overhaul of the piles of
cardboard as did the Village of Lynbrook DPW who sent a bulldozer to
get into the burning pile of cardboard in the street. Merrick
Road was closed to traffic in both direction for a few hours. |
