Engine Company
Cornerstone Laid in 1906
Story by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan from a Brooklyn Eagle Newspaper
article on September 4, 1906
The newspaper archives of the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper reported in
an article dated September 4, 1906, titled, "Lynbrook's New Fire
House, Cornerstone Laid Yesterday After Parade of Firemen Through
Village Streets" that the cornerstone of Engine Company's firehouse
on Atlantic Avenue was laid the day before on September 3, 1906.
A cornerstone ceremony was held after a firefighter's parade through
Lynbrook. The article said, "Every store and residence in
Lynbrook the line of march was prettily decorated." Leading
the parade was Chief James H. Dayton, Assistant Chief Stephen
Dolbeer, Marshall William H. W. Haff and Assistant Marshal Arthur H.
Ebeling, Rowland H. Mayland, president of the New York State
Volunteer Firemen's Assocation, and George Finley, vice president of
the Nassau County Veterans Volunteer Firemen's Association." After
the laying of the cornerstone for the planned 20 by 40 foot
two-story cinder-block firehouse on Atlantic Avenue, there was a
reception and ball at the nearby Lyceum Theatre. The article
said that the new firehouse would be "a tasty design." |
