Training at Former Hot Skates Building
Story & Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan
On Sunday, May 5, 2019,
the members of the Lynbrook Fire Department conducted training
evolutions at the closed Hot Skates building on Merrick Road at
Rocklyn Avenue. The department's training committee, under the
command of Second Assistant Chief John Donald, conducted fire
suppression, search rope and rescue training utilizing the Bullex®Attack™ Digital
Fire Training System to simulate fire like conditions. The
Bullex® system incorporates computer controlled smoke
machines with waterproof TV monitors to simulate a fire, which was
set up in the snack bar area. Three rescue mannequins,
simulating fire victims, were placed through out the smoke filled
building. While crews of firefighters advanced hose lines to
the fire area, other firefighter teams searched for victims.
When the rescue mannequins were located they were carried out by the
firefighters and taken to waiting EMT's from the department's
Emergency Medical Company. The training committee then
presented a critique of the training operation. Lynbrook's
Fire Chief Nick Pearsall said, "It is through training sessions like
this that our Lynbrook firefighters become more proficient in
safeguarding the residents of Lynbrook." |
