Tow Truck needs a Tow Truck. Story & photos by Ex Captain Steven Grogan
On Friday, March 4, 2016, at 9:40 PM, Lynbrook firefighters were dispatched on a general alarm for a multiple auto accident and hazardous material spill at Sunrise Highway and Atlantic Avenue. A flatbed tow truck from a Brooklyn company traveling east on Sunrise Highway and approaching Atlantic Avenue slammed into three unoccupied parked cars on Sunrise breaking its front axle and leaving behind its 55 gallon diesel fuel tank in the roadway. The tank leaked about 25 gallons of fuel onto the highway. The Lynbrook police closed off two of the three lanes on Sunrise so firefighters could stop the flow of the fuel. Second Assistant Chief Carl Lengel was in charge of operations and requested the response of the Haz-Mat unit of the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office which responded and took away the fuel tank. All four vehicles had to be towed from the scene |
