Department Memorial Service 2016
Story by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan; Photos by Brian Grogan
On Sunday, October 30, 2016, Chief John Chavatte led the Lynbrook
Fire Department, the Ladies Auxiliary, and Junior firefighters, as
they assembled at the Firefighters Memorial on Sunrise Highway to
remember and honor six Lynbrook firefighters who made the supreme
sacrifice for this village and died in the line of duty. Also
in attendance were State, town, and local elected officials as well
as visiting chiefs from our surrounding communities. Speeches
were made by Chief Chavatte and Mayor William Hendrick.
Prayers were said by Department Chaplain Robert Walderman, pastor of
the Lynbrook Baptist Church. A wreath was then placed in front
of the memorial marker which lists the firefighter's names as taps
were played and the department bell was rung. After the
memorial service everyone proceeded to the Knights of Columbus Hall
on Hempstead Avenue for breakfast. At the breakfast they heard
a talk by Chief Robert Hughes of the Nassau County Fire Service
Academy in Bethpage.
