Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan
Under rainy skies, the Lynbrook Fire Department, its
firefighters, Ladies Auxiliary, and Junior firefighters, led by
Chief of Department John Chavatte, held its annual Memorial Day
services at the Firefighters Memorial at Sunrise Highway and Earle
Avenue. Also present were the mayor and other local
officials, and elected officials from the town and county.
Members of the Lynbrook American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars
were also present. During the service members of Truck Company
and Hose Company placed wreathes on four stone markers for four
firefighters, two from each company, who were killed in action in
World War II. After the service everyone proceeded to Village
Hall steps for the official 2016 department photo.
Additionally, members of Tally-Ho went to the Doughboy Monument near
the LIRR Station to lay a wreath on the stone marker of their
Ex-Captain Jeffrey L. Wiener killed in Iraq on May 7, 2005.
