Smith Street House Fire
Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan
On July 30, 2019, at approximately 7:30 PM, the Lynbrook Fire
Department under the command of Chief Nick Pearsall responded to
a reported house fire at 99 Smith Street opposite Summit
Avenue. Chief Pearsall was first on the scene and with Lynbrook
police officers escorted the homeowner from the house when he
was found inside. Chief Pearsall went up to the second floor
and found a heavy smoke condition and a wall in the kitchen on
fire. He immediately broadcast a Signal 10 to FIRECOM and used
a water can to knock down some of the fire. Firefighters were
at this same house for a similar fire in the same kitchen about
six weeks ago. Hose Company was the first engine to arrive and
took the hydrant across the street. Hose members stretched a
line and took it to the second floor and quickly extinguished
the fire containing the damage to the kitchen wall and nearby
pantry area. A second line was stretched but not used. Truck
Company laddered the building. The Fire Marshal's Office was
called to conduct an investigation of the cause of the fire.
Additionally, the Village of Lynbrook' Building Superintendent
was also on scene. The homeowner was attended to by North Shore
Hospital paramedics. |
