Lightning Strike Causes Fire at Lynbrook HS

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan

On July 22, 2019, Lynbrook firefighters under the command of Chief Nick Pearsall responded at approximately 8:20 PM to a heavy smoke condition inside Lynbrook High School on Union Avenue after lightning struck an antenna on the roof during a heavy rain and lightning storm. The smoke condition was noticed by students and others in the school at the time.  Tally-Ho Engine 3 took the hydrant in front of the school while Engine Company was set up in the back.  Truck Company put its ladder to the roof in the rear.  Mutual aid was received from the East Rockaway, Malverne and Valley Stream Fire Departments.  Firefighters determined that lightning bolt blew-out electrical equipment in a janitor's closet on the third floor and ignited cardboard material in the room.  The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was minor.  Everyone was allowed to re-enter the school.
