Firefighters Bring Christmas to Wounded

Story and Photos by Ex-Captain/Hon Chief Steve Grogan

In the very early hours of December 6, 2019, Lynbrook firefighters led a caravan of fire vehicles which included firefighters from Bellerose, Levittown, Floral Park, and Malverne, on our annual Nassau County Firefighter Operation Wounded Warrior trip to bring Christmas to wounded warriors and their families at the Walter Reed National Medical Center at Bethesda, MD, and the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Fort Belvoir, VA.  While Lynbrook was doing this, other Nassau County firefighters were at Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg in North Carolina doing the same thing.  This is the fifteenth year that Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior has been making these trips to the hospitals and rehabilitation units down the east coast.  Lynbrook has been part of this for ten years.  Lynbrook Assistant Chief MIke Brooks, John Donald, and Chris Kelly made the trip.  Also along on the trip was Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach,  This was the mayor's third trip.  Firefighters first stopped at Bethesda and visited the wounded in hospital beds.  Firefighters got a chance to meet former General Colin Powell.  Lynbrook firefighters then through a Christmas party at the USO building on Fort Belvoir for those assigned to the Wounded Warrior Battalion.  Santa Claus presented gifts to the wounded as well as their children and everyone enjoyed a great meal and a great day.
