2019 Wounded Warrior Concert
Story & Photos by Ex-Captain & Honorary Chief Steve Grogan
"We didn't know people like you existed." Those were the words of
the wife of a wounded US Army major that attended the Lynbrook Fire
Department's Ninth Annual Concert for Wounded Warriors which was
held on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Greis Park. "Seven wounded
soldiers, six males and one female, presently receiving treatment
from war wounds at the Rehabilitation Unit at Fort Belvoir, VA,
along with their families, traveled to Lynbrook to attend the
concert and meet firefighters who care", said Lynbrook Fire Chief
Nick Pearsall.
Hundreds of Lynbrook residents, friends, and fellow firefighters
from surrounding communities came out to support Lynbrook's
continued effort to help these and other wounded warriors. Its
was estimated that 600 people attended along with an additional 100
children.
Three bands, Eurphoria, Therogood Jenkins Live, and a young teenage
group, New York Times, donated their time to entertain the large
crowd estimated at nearly 650 with an additional 100 children.
Over 150 raffles and JetBlue tickets were given away thanks to the
generosity of many businesses and corporations. Many food
companies also donated the food which was made and served by the
department's Ladies Auxiliary. The Holiday Inn Express put up
the soldiers and their families while here for the weekend.
All the monies raised goes to Nassau County Firefighters Operation
Wounded Warrior, a 501-C3 charity that was formed in Nassau County
in 2004. The firefighters are not associated with the Wounded
Warrior Project. Residents that could not attend but wish to
make a contribution, can mail a check directly to Nassau County
Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, PO Box 295, Garden City, NY
11530.
"We are overwhelmed by all of the support," the warriors wife said
when she saw the crowd of people that came out to help them and
other wounded service men and women.
Ex-Chief Kevin Bien, chairman of Lynbrook's wounded warrior events,
and joined by Chief of Department Nick Pearsall, thanks all the
people that supported the firefighters efforts to help our wounded
warriors. |
