Charles O. Weiler, a member of Vulcan
Company 2 of the Lynbrook Fire Department, and an Ex-Captain and
Honorary Chief, passed away on April 18, 2020. Charlie joined
Vulcan Company in April 1954 after serving two years in the US Army
in the Korean War. He had recently celebrated his 66th year as an
active member of the Lynbrook Fire Department. Charlie was
waked at Perry's Funeral Home and buried with military honors at
Calverton National Cemetery on April 27, 2020. Charlie's
fellow firefighters stood at attention in front of the firehouse to
salute his memory as the funeral procession passed the firehouse
where he served for so many years helping to protect the residents
of the Lynbrook community.
Charlie's obituary reads: Charles O. Weiler, 85, of
Lynbrook died on Saturday, April 18, 2020 with his daughters by his
side. Charlie was born to Philip and Edna Weiler on November 6, 1934
in Bayridge, Brooklyn. He was the younger brother of Philip
(deceased) and AnneMarie. His family moved to Lynbrook when he was a
baby and it is here that he spent his life and raised his family.
Charlie was a graduate of St. Raymond School and Lynbrook H.S.
Charlie joined the Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War until
1954. Upon returning to Lynbrook, Charlie joined the Lynbrook Fire
Department-Vulcan Company & Hose Company #2 in April 1954. Charlie
recently celebrated his 66th year as an active member. Charlie rose
through the ranks to Captain of Vulcan Company and in the years that
followed would serve as Warden and Trustee for Vulcan Company.
Charlie was a member of The Southern New York Fireman’s Association.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church in Lynbrook
for 58 years. He worked as a postal clerk in the Lynbrook Post
Office and as a driver for Louis Ohland Meats in Lynbrook. Charlie
also bartended at the Lynbrook Elks Club for many years. Charlie
married Carole A. Coonan in February of 1961. They would make
Lynbrook their home where they raised their daughters, Debbie and
Christine. Sadly, Carole predeceased him in July of 1982. Happy
years would follow as Charlie would see his daughters marry; Debbie
to Ken O’Connor and Christine to Keith Worsdale. Grandchildren that
he loved and kept him laughing followed: Colleen, Timothy, James,
Dennis and Carolyn. Charlie was an uncle to Philip, Elizabeth and
Virginia Weiler as well as Patrick and Timothy Coonan. Charlie or
“Chuckie” as he was known to many loved his family, his friends,
Vulcan Company, the New York Mets, Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune,
reading books and doing jigsaw puzzles. Many will remember him as
“Chance Book Charlie”. As his family mourns their loss and are sad,
they know that he was welcomed by many loving faces! Charlie is
enjoying a reunion with family and great friends. A memorial mass
and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Final
