A Hero Returns Home

Story and Video by Ex-Captain Steve Grogan, Photos by Firefighter Brian Grogan

On Friday evening, June 19, 2009, Lynbrook Firefighter Ryan Carriddi, a US Marine Lance Corporal, returned home from deployment in Afghanistan.  Ryan, a member of Truck Company and the Lynbrook Tumblers Tournament Team, had been in Afghanistan since November 14, 2008.  He flew into LaGuardia this evening and was met by his family and Chief Kevin Bien, and Deputy Chief Mike Hynes.  Ryan and his family were then transported back to Lynbrook in the Chief's vehicles and fire police van.

On the trip back to Lynbrook, they drove under a arch and American flag formed by ladders from the Rockville Centre and Malverne Fire Departments.  They drove under a second arch and flag, formed by ladders from Stewart Manor F.D. and Lynbrook's 428, at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Earle Avenue.  As Ryan arrived on Earle Avenue sirens and horns were blown on Lynbrook's engines which lined Earle Avenue as Truck Company members and Lynbrook firefighters lined the street near the firehouse with American flags.  Truck Company then held an open house for Ryan, his family, friends, firefighters, and guests.  Lynbrook Mayor Brian Curran, Trustees William Hendrick and Hilary Becker, and County Legislator Fran Becker, were also in attendance.
