On April 21, 2009, Kevin A. Bien, a 26 year member of Rescue, Hook
and Ladder Company of the Lynbrook Fire Department, and following in
his late father’s footsteps, was sworn into office as Chief of the
Lynbrook Fire Department for the coming year.
Chief Bien has served
as a deputy chief for the past three years.
The new chief, the son of Ex-Chief Ralph Bien and mother Patricia,
joined the Lynbrook Junior Fire Department when it was formed in
July of 1979. In July 1982, after turning 18 years of age, he
joined the Lynbrook Fire Department. He was Captain of Rescue, Hook
and Ladder from 1993 to 1995 and Captain of the Floodlight Unit from
1998 to 2000. Chief Bien, a life-long resident of Lynbrook, has
worked for Nassau County for 20 years.
There are 14
members of the Chief’s family in the Lynbrook Fire Department, along
with four in the Juniors, and five members in the Ladies Auxiliary.
Chief Bien was awarded the Nassau County Fire Commission Silver
Medal of Valor in 2003 for the rescue of an elderly woman from the
Senior Citizen Complex on Doxsey Place.
Chief Bien is married to his wife Barbara and they have three
daughters, Stephanie, age 13, and a junior firefighter, Nicole, age
11, and Jennifer, 8. They are members of Our Lady of Peace Parish.
Chief Bien and his deputies; First Deputy Chief Raymond Burke,
Second Deputy Chief Michael Hynes, and Third Deputy Chief Anthony
DeCarlo, were all sworn in at the monthly Fire Council meeting by
Lynbrook Mayor Brian Curran. Chief Bien then swore in the company
officers while Village Administrator John Giordano swore in the
Wardens.
